Document Summary
Frustration-aggression theory: dollard and miller (1939) published a book entitled frustration and aggression. Overt aggression either physical or psychological in nature. Viewed as a psychological drive an internal stimulus that energizes or motivates behaviour and is like other drives, (e. g. hunger drive) Factors that influence frustration: high when we expect to achieve blocked goal, increases with importance of blocked goal, high when we are close to achieving the blocked goal. Factors that influence aggressive responses: overt aggression against a source of frustration can be inhibited. Fear of being punished if they be aggressive. Can"t get at their source of frustration. Aggression will be displaced to a safe target/a scapegoat. Observing aggression in others provides models for aggression (that we can imitate, social learning theory) Engaging in harmless forms of aggression can be rewarding. Other sources of negative affect: pain (azrin"s studies of animals, original idea: use negative reinforcement (removal of unpleasant stimulus) to condition two rats to like each other.
