Reading Reference: Chapter 5
Topic: Visual Processing
Horizontal Cells: Between receptor layer and bipolar layer.
Amacrine Cells: Between ganglion and bipolar layer.
Rods & Cones
- Duplex theory
- 120 million rods
- 7 million cones
- Operate at very low light intensity
o Sensitive for brightness
- No rods in the fovea
- Operate at higher light intensities
o Insensitive for brightness
- Concentrate in fovea
- Full colour
How Do Rods and Cones Work?
- Light hits a visual pigment, which breaks down to produce an action potential
- Rods: Rhodopsin (Red, bleaches when exposed to light)
