When demands of both ego and id begin to be restricted our 3rd personality starts to develop this is our superego. These three personality structures are often in conflict. And the way these conflicts are resolved influences our personality development. When personality structures are in conflict it produces anxiety. And its anxiety that has to be reduced. Each of us have finite amount of energy systems. The more of our psychological energy we have to use on defense mechanism the less we have left for dealing with other issues of life . Direct sexual feelings towards others lead to sexual gratification. Given a normal childhood and good and understanding parents most children will pass uneventfully through pre genital stages.
