Action potentials represent tactile, smells, taste, sounds, even emotion and desire. This records what each individual neuron is doing at any given time. Came up with conclusion that all neurons tune themselves to the sensory input that they receive: if they receive a vision stimulus, they respond by seeing, if they receive an auditory stimulus, they respond by hearing. Pattern of firing serves as neurons" code. Some fire constantly, some in bursts, some hardly ever. Visual system: an incredible decrease in number of neurons occurs at each relay. It increases when it is within the cortical visual association areas. The visual pathway responds to only dots of light then the primary visual cortex responds to only bars of light and the even higher visual system responds to more complex stimuli.
