Sociology 1020 Chapter Notes - Chapter 15: Emotional Contagion, Collective Behavior, Political Opportunity
Document Summary
Panics: occur when people are overcome by fear or apprehension and try to save themselves or their possession by taking immediate action. Crowds: conventional, casually emerge; depart sharply from the routine, as when a fight breaks out among fans at a soccer game. Fads: unconventional practices that spread rapidly and are adopted in a short period of time by a large number of people. Craze: special kind of fad that involves unusual commitment and enthusiasm and is inevitably regarded as strange and offensive by other people. Public: large and dispersed group made up of persons who share an interest in the same thing; either hold similar views or sharply disagree. Social movement: large collectivity of people trying to bring about or resist social change; best organized and most institutionalized. Blumer was concerned with the behaviour of unconventional crowds. Turner and killian argued there is great diversity among those who participate in a crowd.
