Document Summary
Refers to the print, radio, television, and other communicaion technologies. Oten, mass media and mass communicaions are used interchangeable to refer to the transmission of informaion from one person or group to another. The word mass implies that the media reachs many people. The word media signiicates that communicaion does not take place directly through face-to-face interacion. The rise of mass media can be explained by religious, poliical, and economic factors: the protestant reformaion. Once protestanism was established in europe millions of people were encouraged to read. The bible became the irst mass media product in the west: democraic movements. Poliical democracy promoted the growth of mass media. Governments depended on an informed ciizenry and therefore encouraged popular literacy and the growth of a free press. It is claimed that mass media simpliied poliics, as it has been reduced to well maintained images, catchy slogans and ever shorter uninterrupted comments: capitalist industrializaion. Modern industries required a literate and numerate workforce.
