Sociology 1027a: elite discourses of sex, gender and sexuality. The power of elite discourses is evident for sex, gender and sexualities. Elite discourses- emerge from positions of authority - widely accepted, it forbids people to imagine alternative possibilities. Sex is considered to be dualism in elite discourses. Female & male - not a gender but sex. Sex : biological characteristics that include sex chromosomes, primary and secondary sex characteristics. Dualism: a contrast between two opposing categories - opposite sex . (sex + gender are categorized by dualism) Gender: describes the social world and socially determined the expected and actual thoughts, feelings and behaviours associated with a particular sex, within the culture at a given point of history. Ex: femininity - thoughts, feelings and behaviours associated with being female (passivity, kindness, shyness) Masculinity - ~ being a male (dominance, independence, self-reliance) They are described in terms of certain personality traits or characteristics.
