Elements of social structure: social fact (emile durkheim) phenomena created by social organizations rather than individual acts of desperation (employment rates, morbidity, mortality) Institution established and enduring pattern of social relationships, largest elements of social structure: 5 traditional institutions = family, religion, politics, economics, and education, many social problems derive from inadequacies in institutions or conflicts between institutions. Master status status that is considered most significant in a perso(cid:374)"s so(cid:272)ial ide(cid:374)tity (usually gender/race, can change over time such as job title) Roles: roles a set of rights, obligations, and expectations associated with a status, guides our behaviour and allows us to predict the behaviour of others. Elements of culture: culture refers to the meanings and ways of life that characterize a society. Beliefs: beliefs definitions and explanations about what is assumed to be true, beliefs of an individual or group influence whether that individual or group views particular social conditions as a social problem.
