Document Summary

Abstract worker one with no family, children, or other outside obligations who exist only for the work. Men in the 19th and 20th centuries were often able to live up to this abstract ideal: men supported families through work and had a homemaker wife to perform domestic labour for them. Working for pay was their primary responsibility. Division of labour is not as apparent now. There has been an increase in women and young children participating in the labour force between 1986 and 2001. In 2001, 71% of women with children living at home were in the work force: household labour and childrearing. 20th century housework for most women was an activity they performed by themselves for their families in isolated family homes. Raising the children and taking care of them was seen as a duty that required time and effort. Many women worked outside the home until marriage.
