33 views3 pages

Document Summary

Adolescents are the new consumers prime targets! Mass communication = national peer pressure that erodes private and individual values and standards. Advertisers take advantage of insecurities and anxieties. Adolescent girls are afflicted with range of products including self esteem, eds, drinking, date rape, violence, teen pregnancy, smoking cigs. 1998 status says: girls closed gap with boys in math and science, but also closing gap on rebellion! Culture urges girls to adopt false self: feminine (kind, sweet, compete for boys) and value relationships above all else. Repress power to be nice, but then have to compete with men in work force. Does not apply to african american and jewish girls: encouraged to be assertive and outspoken, racism and classism experience exacerbate their problems. Working-class girls not expected to be stars in business. Boys live in culture of cruelty and oppressed by tyranny of toughness. Manifest social and emotional disconnection through anger and violence.
