One difference between 2 styles comes from the nature of data. Soft data: impressions, words, sentences, photos and symbols. Qualitative researchers rely on interpretive social sci, follow a non-linear path and speak a language of (cid:498)cases and contexts(cid:499) emphasize conducting detailed examinations of cases that arise in the natural flow of social life. Quantitative researchers rely on a positive approach to social sci, follow a linear path, speak a lang of (cid:498)variables and hypothesis(cid:499) and emphasize precisely measuring variables & testing hyps that are linked to general casual explanations. Linear: proceeds in a clear, logical, step-by-step straight line (like a staircase) Non: proceeds in a circular, back-and-forth manor (spiral) Qual: begin with very general research questions and topic emerges slowly during the study (flexible) prepared to change direction of research and follow new lines of evidence. Quan: narrow a topic into a focused question, broad topic (cid:498)immigrants(cid:499)
