Chapter 5 summary Asking Questions Open questions • Advantages: o Respondents can answer in their own terms o Allows for unusual answers, different answers that the researcher was not thinking of o Make participant think deeper o Can generate fixed format answers • Disadvantages: o Time consuming o Answers have to be coded, which takes a lot of time and effort o Lower response rate o Inaccuracies in recording answers • Coding: key stage in quantitative data o Create numbers for each answer, and look for themes and/or patterns o Post coding: codes/ numbers are created after o Pre coding: numbers are created in advance o Categories must not overlap or else numbers assigned to them will not denote distinct behaviors/responses o List of categories must be cover all possible answers, or else some
