Studies of social mobility often examine relative mobility to determine what the prevalence of equality of opportunity is across various capitalist societies. Intergenerational mobility studies analyze the characteristics of parents and the likelihood that their children will obtain occupations of higher-status or an education of a higher-level in comparison to their parents. Children are often constrained by their parents" occupation and education - but in some countries ambitious children can do better than their parents did. Global perspective - box 6. 1: social mobility around the world. An author who grew up in the 1980s in england saw evidence of downward social mobility in her everyday life. Most families reproduced their class or fell lower in the social hierarchy. Moving up the structure of social class was not common. She lived in a middle-class home with her only connection to the upper class being an 18th century ancestor.
