Sociology 2235 Chapter Notes - Chapter 1: Marxism, Indian Act, Acculturation
Document Summary
One of our deepest human needs is to have someone close to us who we can confide in, and who loves and understands us. Families are composed of close relationships that may include friendship, long-term social/work relationships, and love affairs. Despite the fact that single-parent homes, divorce rates, and children being born out of wedlock is increasing, polls show that the value of family life is increasing. Families continue to be valued due to their provision of economic security and emotional support, which keeps us grounded and reassured throughout our lives. Family is usually seen as people who are related through marriage, adoption, or blood, while most canadians see the traditional family (husband, wife, child) as ideal. However there is no true definition of a traditional family. There are varying definitions of families, however canada"s immigration policy defines family as spouses and close blood relatives.
