Prior to the 18th century prisons were used as holding tanks and rarely held offenders for any length of time. Generally, punishment was used to serve functions: 1. Retribution lex talionis (cid:862)a(cid:374) eye for a(cid:374) eye(cid:863) the code of hammurabi. Sir william blackstone identified 160 offences punishable by death in 1760, which grew to over 200 in the 18th century. Commonly reffered to as the bloody code, people were executed for the most minor crime such as stealing. Cost common corporal punishment was flogging (whipping) The influence of the enlightenment on crime and punishment. Punishment became less focused on the body: at the core of this philosophy was free will, hedonism, and the social contract. Pennsylvania model called for total isolation of prisoners day and night. Prisoners had no contact with the outside world whatsoever , and even duties were completed in isolation. Auburn model isolation of prisoners at night, but by day that laboured and ate together.
