Stigmas may produce the deviant behaviour that is being condemned: self-fulfilling prophecy. Development of a strong defensive morale within deviant subcultures was a secondary gain for individuals involved in deviant behaviour. *theorists argue that the disabled are deviant bc they break rules or violate social norms of acceptability in appearance or behaviour. Goffman differentiates among three kinds of stigma, stigma based on various physical deformities, or blemishes of character, or tribal stigmas of religion, race, and nation. In these terms, deinstitutionalized psychiatric patients are stigmatized because of blemishes of individual character and infertile women are stigmatized because of abnormal bodily function.
