What is criminal law: criminal law- body of jurisprudence includes definition of various crimes, specification various penalties, set of general principles concerning criminal responsibility and series defences to criminal charge. The sources of criminal law: 2 primary sources cn criminal law: legislation and judicial decisions either interpret legislation/ state common law . Only parliament of canada, using criminal law power under constitution act, 1867, may enact a true crime : regulatory offences- legislation (fed/prov/ territorial) regulates inherently legitimate activities connected w trade, commerce and industry/ everyday living (driving, fishing etc). These offences not considered serious and usually carry only rel minor penalty upon conviction. Indeed, many regulatory offences sanctioned by means of ticketing system and fines may often be paid online (quasi-criminal law: maximum penalties gen no more fine/ maximum term of imprisonment 6 months/ both.
