Chapter 17­ Images of Society: If MEN COULD MENSTRUATE • Gloria Steinem: patriarchal society like ours, differently about menstruation if it was associated with the dominant  group (men) rather than the subordinate group (female), topic of menstruation is strongly tabooed • Male human beings= penis­envy is “natural” to women • Power to give birth makes womb­envy at least as logical • Powerful­ thought to be better than powerless • Men could menstruate & women could not­ menstruation would become an enviable, boastworthy, masculine event: o Men would brag about how long + how much o Boys would mark the onset of menses, longed­for proof of manhood, with religious rituals & stag parties o Sanitary supplies would be federally funded & free o Military men, right­wing politicians & religious fundamentalists cite menstruation (“men­struation”) as proof  that only man could serve in the Army (“ you have to give blood to take blood”), occupy political office (“can  women be aggressive without that steadfast cycle governed by the planet mars?”), be priests and ministers  (“how could a woman give her blood for our sins?”), or rabbis (“without the mont
