Statistical Sciences 2037A/B Chapter Notes - Chapter 9.1, 9.5: Pie Chart, Time Series, Histogram
Document Summary
Basic characteristics: data should stand out clearly from background, should be clear labeling indicates. What each axes, bar, pie, etc. denotes. Scale of axis, including starting points: source should be given for data, should be little chart junk" - extraneous material. 9. 5: dif culties and disasters in plots, graphs and pictures. Most common problems: no labeling on one or more axes. When there is no info about units used on one of the axes, plot cant be interpreted: not stating at 0 as a way to exaggerate trends. Common ploy is to present an increasing or decreasing trend over time on a graph that doesn"t start at 0. Some graphs, it makes sense to start the units on the axes at values diff than 0: distorting time series plots. A partial series can be presented to mask the long term trends and cycles present in the full series.
