Identify how emerging adults are affected differently than others by off-time and other losses. Discuss how technology and social media are involved with loss among emerging adults. Emerging adults was coined in 2000 to define the ambiguous time between adolescence and adulthood around the age of 18-25. This was justified due to the fact that marriage, childbearing and career formation were gradually getting pushed back further due to extended education and economic dependence. Five features that provided rationale for this new stage are: identity explorations, instability, self-focus, feeling in-between, anticipating many possibilities. Emerging adulthood is creeping into the 30s due to arnetts hypothesis about the relationship of development and the economy. The prefrontal cortex is not fully integrated until the approximate age of 25. This is the stage where we move toward self-sufficiency. This is a time of instability in love, work, and worldviews. With the great recession, kids moved home after college instead of out on their own.
