Psychology Notes Chapter 5 Today’s class, perceptions on illusions, and how we see things the way they are and why Is our experience 1 to 1, what’s out there that’s represented the exact way you see it? You saw in the table example how things aren’t always as they seem, and we see things differently, in possibly in accurate ways. Bottom Up Process Analysis of individual stimulus elements Top Down processing What have I seen before that matches this? Example is if I am in a forest then I shouldn’t expect a fridge to pop up. These two processes combine, and it occurs very quickly. Sometimes you do get fooled. What do we attend to? It involves 2 processes - Focusing- you have to focus on certain stimuli, by - filtering and zoning out unnecessary things. So professor attends to and makes you focus on the front lecture, so you attend to what they are talking about. Both stimulus (1) and personal factors (2) play a role in attention Example- advertising, they want to get your attention, some get your attention, some don’t, look at itunes/ apple. ( In this clip there is a l=picture of the itunes, color ups) Example, coke, with no words. When you are exposed to a repetition of ads, you become familiar ith the logo, with repetition Internal factors  personal: if your hungry, and you walk pass a bakery, you will notice it, if you aren’t hungry, you will not notice it. Bascially the jist here, I syou see what you want to see and are thinking of. Another thing that gets our attention is anger= if you walk by someone who is angry, it gets your attention, and you notice what they do, in a way for your protection.
