Document Summary

The setting is similarly modeled to the palace of tiberius in rome. There are two aspects about this painting that create a semi realistic portrayal of how people (mainly women) lived in the roman era. The marble floors and columns indicate that the woman who is an occupant of the palace ( probably a spouse or mistress) comes from wealth. This column architecture was typical in the roman era especially in larger estates. The second aspect of this painting that portrays civilization in the roman era is the women. The woman in the sheer dress that barley covers her nakedness along with the piper, and the cithara player featured in the surroundings are more likely to be her aides, servants or even slaves of the palace. Evidently the woman on the right in the emerald stola is the woman of wealth because she is wearing jewelry and beads. Jewelry was a common indication of wealth in the roman era.
