Getty museum (2011) apollo from pompeii: investigating an ancient bronze. Apollo in the pose of an archer, one of the first large scale bronzes to be excavated at. Found in fragments in 1817 and 1818. Sculpture originally housed in the colonnaded courtyard of the temple of apollo. Statue made using the lost wax technique. Large hole in the lower back, covered by sculpted drapery: only became apparent through x-ray, intentionally created, purpose uncertain. Reconstruction was complete by 1825: assembled around internal iron armature in left leg, fragments joined using iron straps secured with brass screws and solder. Aphrodite was connected with maritime affairs, civic harmony, and welfare. Siotto et al.
