BI110 Chapter Notes - Chapter 35-44: Cellular Respiration, Chemosynthesis, Decomposer
Document Summary
Matter: anything that occupies space and has mass. Energy: the capacity to do work (light, kinetic, potential) Some matter produced through big bang, others produced in nuclear reactions in core of stars. Generations survive on it because of continual recycling. Organisms get energy from sun; emits electromagnetic energy. Organic molecule: compounds that contain carbon and hydrogen (maybe others); in all organisms. Producers: organisms that convert co2 into organic molecules. Bonds of organic compounds need lots of energy to be formed, get from sunlight (prokaryotes) Photosynthesis: using sunlight to make organic molecules from co2, main source of organic molecs. Carbon dioxide + water + energy > organic molecules + oxygen. Other producers can get energy from inorganic molecules from chemosynthesis. Cellular respiration: extracting energy from organic molecules (animals can"t photosynthesize; called consumers) Organic molecs + oxygen > carbon dioxide + water + energy. Decomposers: bacteria/fungi that consume organic matter from waste products and salvage some stored energy.
