Document Summary

Two types: cell wall (found in bacteria, fungi, and some archaea, extracellular matrix (ecm) found in animals and protozoans. Similarities between both: composed of fibers embedded in a gel-like matrix, anchor cells within given tissue or environment, play a role is cell-cell communication, regulate movement of substances in and out of a cell. Composed of collagen, proteoglycans and associated proteins linking cells and ecm to one another structurally and functionally: collagen. Composes almost 40% of total amount of protein in human body: proteoglycans. Fibers formed by collagen that integrate into a network. Proteins branch from these and smaller carbohydrate branch from the proteins. Very high % of carbs, sometimes up to 95% of entire proteoglycan. Very hydrophilic and form gel-like colloid around exterior of cell: fibronectins. Associate with collagen and other ecm components. Able to transmit messages b/w microfilaments and ecm through integrins, fibronectins help cells attach and move through ecm.
