Document Summary

Potential energy: how much energy an object could have. In the case of biology, potential energy is energy that can be released when bonds between molecules break. Catabolic reactions: metabolic pathways that break down complex molecules into smaller ones, releasing some potential energy in the process. Anabolic reactions: using energy to build mote complex molecules in chemical form. It can be transformed or transferred, but it can not be created or destroyed. Energy in any closed system (in earth"s case, the universe) will remain constant. Every time energy is transferred or transformed, some of it is let out as heat. Basic bodily metabolic reactions keep the human body at 37* celsius. Another way to think of this law is that no energy conversion is perfect. Entropy: a measure of chaos or disorder in a system. Gibbs free energy: the chemical potential energy in a solution, given that temperature and pressure are uniform.
