Document Summary

All cells bound by external membrane the plasma membrane. Organisms need to retain materials needed to function and maintain homeostasis, protect materials from external environment. The plasma membrane serves three primary functions: protecting the cell, controlling the cell"s cytoplasmic contents, and sensing molecules and other cells in the external environment. The plasma membrane protects the cell by controlling the materials that move into and out of the cell. The plasma membrane is selectively permeable, some types of materials can cross without assistance and others cannot. The plasma membrane binds to the cytoskeleton and extracellular matrix. These structures help maintain cell"s shape like poles of a tent. Protein and carbohydrate components of plasma membrane are able to detect key molecules and other cells in external environment. Proteins embedded in membrane can bind to and respond to chemical signals. The motion and varied units are the reason the plasma membrane is called a fluid mosaic.
