Description
Sustainable Waterloo Region is a not-for-profit organization created by two Laurier graduates: Mike Morrice and Chris DePaul in 2008. The purpose of their organization is to support the Waterloo Region in becoming more prosperous and environmentally stable. In the past this has been accomplished through assisting businesses in the Waterloo Region in becoming more environmentally friendly. Sustainable Waterloo Region is able to achieve its goals through the participation of many local businesses. Once a company has agreed to participate in making an attempt to lower their carbon emissions, Sustainable Waterloo Region provides them with an online resource. This resource will assist them in measuring their carbon emissions, as well as offer suggestions as to how they could lower these emissions in the future. Participating businesses can either choose to be “pledging partner” or an “observing organization.” The difference between these two is that a pledging partner is one that actively works towards reducing its carbon emissions, while an observing partner is one who observes its emissions, and works towards possibly participating in the future.
