Involves going beyond formal role requirements to influence others. Informal leaders rely on being well liked or perceived as highly skilled to exert influence. The trait theory of leadership - leadership depends on the personal qualities or traits of the leader. Implicit assumption that those who become good leaders possess a special set of traits that distinguish them from followers.
