Document Summary
Motivation: the extent to which persistent effort is directed toward a goal. Motivation helps organizations make the best use of their resources. Can vary by job, physical vs. mental effort: persistence. Are the workers channeling their effort and persistence in a manner that is beneficial for the organization: goals. Setting a goal to accomplish; an end point. Extrinsic and intrinsic motivation and self determination theory. Controlled motivation and autonomous motivation are on a continuum (not binary) Intrinsic motivation: motivation that stems from the direct relationship between the worker and the task; it is usually self-applied. Extrinsic motivation: motivation that stems from the work environment external to the task; it is usually applied by others. Some researchers believe that extrinsic motivation weakens a workers intrinsic motivation. Intrinsic and extrinsic motivation are factors used in self-determination theory. Self-determination theory: when people are motivated by intrinsic factors, they are in control of their motivation or what is called autonomous motivation.
