Most people in today"s workforce are attempting to balance work with family demands. Work-family conflict a type of inter-role conflict in which the role pressures experienced in the work and family domains are incompatible. High work-family conflict is associated with reduced work performance and higher rates of absenteeism. Work-family conflict is also associated with substantial health and well-being costs for individuals. A high degree of work-family conflict contributes to perceived stress, poorer physical health, decreased family functioning, increased mental health concerns, and increased alcohol use. We will consider three broad categories of family-friendly programs: flexible work arrangements, work leave systems, and family-friendly employee benefits. Flexible work arrangements family-friendly policies that involve modifications to the traditional work schedule. Two basic versions of these fwas: one reduces the amount of time spent in the workplace and one increases the amount of control that individuals have over their work schedule.
