HN220 Chapter Notes - Chapter 9: Dorsal Root Ganglion, Anterior Grey Column, Posterior Grey Column
Document Summary
Chapter 9 the spinal cord cylinder of nervous tissue that is continuous w the lower end of the brain and is surrounded by the vertebral column. Three main parts: the forebrain, cerebellum, and brainstem. Cerebellum: outer cortex and inner nuclei, for motor coordination and balance, provides feedback to motor systems for smooth movements. Important for involuntary functions controlled by the ans. Cerebral cortex: outermost portion of the cerebrum, thin layer of gray matter. Includes sulci and gyri: most advanced area of the brain, and most recent area to develop, carries out the highest level of neural processing. Initiates voluntary movement: motor and sensory homunculus, association areas. Brain lateralization: this is not absolute. Indications of lateralization came from studies of stroke patients and those who had their corpus callosum cut. Subcortical nuclei: gray matter located w/in the cerebrum, basal nuclei: caudate nucleus, globus pallidus and putamen, basal nuclei are for modifying movement.
