Interventions: modi cations of the speci c factors that a ect physical activity based on an understanding of the commonalities in human behaviour with an appreciation of the di erences that exist between individuals. Determinant research: examines the factors that a ect exercise behaviour. Intervention research: research that evaluates how manipulating important factors identi ed through determinant research a ects exercise behaviour. Challenge is to develop programs that address and attempt to manipulate as many of these factors as possible, increasing probably of people being active in future. Two types of research of physical activity. Outcome variable: a response that occurs as a consequence of being involved in physical activity. Outcome based exercise research: research that develops interventions and tests whether or not they positively a ect excercise behaviour. Treatment variable: variable that is presented to an individual to see its e ect on an outciome variable.
