KP181 Chapter Notes - Chapter Chapter 12 part #2: Masters Athletics
Document Summary
Physical activity levels as children only have weak correlations with physical activity in adulthood. Alcohol consumption is negatively related to physical activity and there are other studies that show alcohol to have a positive effect on habitual exercise. The relationship between physical activity and other health behaviours are complex. Levels of social support are crucial to physical activity involvement. Endorsement of physical activity by peers or physicians can positively affect the likelihood that older adults with initiate and maintain physical activity involvement. Dynamic interaction among members of an exercise group can also influence physical activity levels. Greater cohesion in groups led to better rates of attendance and better adherence than control groups. Men are seen to be stronger than women and therefore exercise more. Women are seen to be frail and exercising is seen to be dangerous so they are often discouraged.
