Mixed methods research: approach to inquiry combining quantitative, and qualitative forms of research: systematic and purposeful mixing of both approaches in a study. In any research study, research question is what drives the direction of the research: once you have a question, research design should match to best answer it. Quantitative and qualitative will inform the research question in distinct ways. Researchers characteristics have a role on what type of research design: philosophical worldview, education, training, past research experience. Researchers with a post-positivist view are less likely to do qualitative research. Mixed methods are taken on by pragmatist. Whether it will be conducted simultaneously or sequentially. Concurrent mixed methods: conducting qualitative and quantitative at the same time. Sequntial mixed methods: conducting one which informs the other. Also must decide if one will have more emphasis than the other: aka priority. The researcher does not have to clearly indicate if one has more emphasis than the other.
