Basic Beginning Band Techniques
Establish Routines immediately… dealing with:
Where do I go? Where do I put my bags and books? Where do I sit? When do I
get my instrument? Folder? When do I put it away? Where do I put them when
we are not playing?
Set the “norms” clearly, practice them, re-inforce them, and keep the mystery for
the music making.
Expect the best. Expect that they will “play beyond their years,”, meaning:
• playing to their potential
• listening to music and responding
• responding to direction
• engaging in musical activity, exploring, experimenting, feeling, understanding
• developing good
musical habits
Establish Breathing
99% of what band players do requires good breathing technique. Not only how
much, but how and when.
Sensory: - get the feeling of where the air goes
- feel how much is required
- feel the effect of sustained air pressure
Timing: - in one count before they play
- this improves rhythm and phrsing
Release: - add articulation to effect of air release
- feel the effect of sustained air pressure
How? - stand up!
- no instrument…mouthpiece only
Developing Tone: Brass and Buzzing: - to focus the brass sound
Phrasing: Each musical moment, wheter in class or rehearsal; warm-up,
technical practice or ensemble work, should be leading toward the development
of a phrase.
Eg. - returning scale
- chorale or chord progression which allows for 4 bar phrase dev’t
- add shape to everything you do.
Balance: - hearing, singing, and reproducing sound on instrument
- finding your roots
- hiding those devils
- playing into another sound
- playing in
tone
Articulation: equals rhythm and clarity. It also can strongly reflect the character of
the music, the sense of style, a feeling of energy and drama.
