PO225 Chapter Notes - Chapter 8: Asian Americans, Social Capital, Unbridled
Document Summary
How we participate: the pathways to participation in the political system break into three broad categories, traditional participation, civic voluntarism, direct action. Traditional participation: traditional participation means getting involved in politics through formal government channels voting, working for a candidate, signing petitions or writing letters to the newspaper. Voting: the foundational political participatory act in any democracy, two steps, registering to vote, casting a vote. Electoral activities: beyond voting, engage in other electoral activities, electoral activities are public engagement in the form of voting, running for office, volunteering in a campaign, or otherwise participating in elections. If you volunteer, you are more likely to vote, pay attention to political affairs and otherwise engage in public life: successful democracies require a vibrant civic spirit. Age: age is a strong predictor of political engagement older people vote more often, some evidence suggests younger voters are more likely to try and influence politics.
