Abnormal psychology the study of psychological disorders. 20% of adult canadians experience serious psychological disturbances in a given year. In ancient times, mental illness was viewed as being possessed : cures involved burning, drowning, most did not survive. A condition called general paresis that caused madness was linked to syphilis: showed people that mental illnesses can be linked to biological illness, also led to moral treatment more humane treatment for the mentally ill. Medical model has also changed how mental illness is perceived: encourages a search for a group of symptoms, which can be used to identify a syndrome and then a search for a cure for the syndrome. Abnormality is classified with the 4 ds: deviance. Behaviour, thoughts and emotions that differ from society"s idea of proper functioning. Certain behaviours are more or less favoured in certain cultures. Societies also change over time: distress. Behaviours, thoughts and emotions that are causing distress or unhappiness: dysfunction.
