Sleep: restores bodily resources depleted from waking activities, chronobiology: how circadian rhythm affects immune system, suprachiasmastic: sensitivity to light (regulates function) Rem sleep: discovered by william dement in the 1950"s. Circadian rhythm: the 24-hour biological cycles found in humans and other species. Influential in the regulation of sleep: examples: body temperature, urine production, hormonal secretions, everything follows a 24 hour peak/loss schedule, melatonin: plays a key role in adjusting biological clocks. Relatively brief (2-3 minutes), hallucinations (images, lights), sensation of falling (or floating) An ascend through stages 3 to stage 2 to rem sleep. Brain is fully functioning, body is completely immobile (no voluntary muscle movement), dreams occur: body cycles through these stages through the night (typically get around 25% rem sleep during a night)
