Document Summary

Psychology"s intellectual parents were the disciplines of philosophy and physiology. Wundt made psychology an independent discipline when he established the first psychological research lab in 1879 at leipzig, germany (rather than a stepchild of philosophy or physiology). He definied psychology as the scientific study of consciousness. Historians christened 1879 as psychology"s date or birth. Psychology became the scientific study of conscious experience. Modern definition of psychology: psychology is the science that studies behaviour and the physiological and cognitive processes that underlie it, and it is the profession that applies the accumulated knowledge of this science to practical problems. The 7 major research areas in modern psychology are: developmental psych, social psych, experimental psych, physiological psych, cognitive psych, personality, and psychometrics. 4 areas of specialization: clinical psych (most prominent), counselling psych, educational and school psych, and industrial and organizational psych. Although clinical psychology and psychiatry share some of the same interests, they are different professions with different types of training.
