Document Summary

Consciousness is the awareness of internal and external stimuli. Your consciousness is continuously changing, which william james deemed the stream of consciousness. Attention and its basis in our neural networks may be a concept that could serve as a unifying concept in psychology. We know surprisingly little about how consciousness, or subjective experience, arises from the functioning of the brain. Almost every human behaviour comes from a mixture of conscious and unconscious processing. While attention and consciousness are clearly closely related, they are not identical, you can have one without the other. Mind wandering: refers to people"s experience of task-unrelated thoughts, thoughts that are not related to what they are intentionally trying to do at a given moment. It is estimated that people spend 15-50% of their time mind wandering. Controlled processes: judgements or thoughts that we intend to occur. Automatic processes: without our intentional control of effort.
