Superego moral component of personality that incorporates social standards about what represents right and wrong: social norms regarding morality are eventually internalized (age 3-5) The conscious consists of whatever one is aware of at a paricular point in ime (i. e. i"m reading this textbook) The preconscious material just beneath the surface of awareness that can easily be retrieved: your middle name, what you had for supper last night. The unconscious contains thoughts, memories, and desires that are well below the surface of consciousness but that nonetheless exert great inluence on behavior: forgoten trauma from childhood, repressed sexual desires, hidden feelings of hosility towards a parent.
