PS102 Chapter Notes - Chapter 10: Mental Scale, Display Rules, Sexual Orientation
Document Summary
Street kids have rejected traditional society and its standards; but have not replaced them with their own long term goals: focus on short term aimless goals. Drive theories apply to the concept of homeostasis. Homeostasis: a state of physiological equilibrium or stability. Incentive: is an external goal that has the capacity to motivate beahviour. Ice cream, approval from a friend, an a on an exam, promotion at work, all example of incentive. Incentive emphasizes how external stimuli pull people in certain directions. Do not operate according to the homeostasis model. Expectancy-value model: two factors, expectancy: about one"s chance of attaining incentive, value of the desired incentive, based on these factors, motivation will be greater or lower. Natural selection favors behaviours that maximize reproduction success: explains achievement, dominance, and sex drive in terms of their adaptive value. If dominance is a crucial motive for species, it provides reproduction or survival advantage.
