Materials learned in one setting are well remembered when the person returns to that setting; less well remembered in other settings. The more similar the individual"s state of consciousness is from the time of learning to the time of retrieval the better memory will be. Conditions 2 groups of scuba divers. One group learning lists of words on land. Half of each study group recalled words on land. Half of each study group recalled words underwater. Overlap between testing context and learning context improves performance because psychological consistency (not physical) Participants given pairs of words and told to use the 1st word to help them remember 2nd word. The tendency when memorizing to place in memory both the materials to be learning and also some amount of context of those materials. Materials will be later recognized as familiar only if the materials appear again in a similar context. Study list learn target words in capital letters.
