PS260 Chapter Notes - Chapter 8: Autobiographical Memory, Hyperthymesia, Egg Salad
Document Summary
Hyperthymesia: superior autobiographical recall: able to recall every day of their lives, over a span of many years. Their amazing memory has not made them geniuses or incredible scholars. They seem to have no advantage in remembering other sorts of content or in performing other mental tasks. Memory errors, memory gaps (in this chapter: how and how often errors of memory arise) (airplane crash study) Study by brewer and treyens: people came into the study expecting there to be a chair and desk which were present, so there was an agreement between prior knowledge and experience that led to accurate memory. However, when they were asked if they remembered seeing books in the office 9 out of 30 remember seeing books even though there were none. Memory errors: a hypothesis the huge network of interconnected nodes have no boundaries keeping memories of the episode separate from memories of other episodes.
