Happens when infants lying in breech position and born feet or buttocks first. Can occur when placenta separates prematurely, interrupting supply of food and oxygen. Sedatives given to mother cross placenta and interfere with baby"s breathing or mucus lodged in throat. Can be caused by genetic incompatibility between rh positive fetus (rh protein in blood) and rh negative mother (lacks this substance) When placenta deteriorates rh negative mothers exposed to blood of rh positive fetuses and they produce rh antibodies which attack baby"s red blood cells and deplete oxygen. Firstborns usually not affected as mother has no rh antibodies till she gives birth to rh positive child. Can be prevented with vaccine that prevents mother from forming rh antibodies. Children who experience anoxia often irritable at birth and may score below average on motor and mental development tests through first 3 years.
