Document Summary

Design in which two or more independent variables are manipulated within a single study. Two way factorial designs have 2 independent variables. Researchers often describe structure of factorial design in a way that immediately indications to reader how many iv were manipulated and how many levels there were of each variable. Ex 2x2 factorial design: two iv, each had two levels. 4x2 has 2 iv, one with 4 levels and one with 2 levels. 2x2x2 has 3 iv, each with 2 levels (resulting in 8 conditions that reflect possible combinations of the three iv) As we add more iv and more levels of our iv, the number of conditions increases rapidly. You can tell how many conditions there are by multiplying numbers in a design specification. Factorial designs may include randomized groups, matched subjects, repeated measures designs in addition to the split plot (between-within) design which combines features of randomized groups and repeated measures designs.
