PS398 Chapter 1: Qualitative vs Quantitative Research
Document Summary
Anyone can read and appreciate qualitative research and it is easy to carry out. Quantitative studies rely on complicated statistical analyses that require prior knowledge to decode their meaning. Some methods of qualitative research (ethnography, case studies, grounded theory) have been around for a long time, others (narrative analysis, constructivism, phenomenological approaches) are newer. Favour naturalistic observation and interviewing over the decontextualizing approaches of quantitative research. Imply a degree of closeness and an absence of controlled conditions. Open systems assumption where the observational context (and the observer) is part of the study itself whereas quantitative research favours closed/controlled system approach where effort to neutralize the effects of the observational context are made. Emphasizes subjective meanings and question existence of a single objective reality. Assume a dynamic reality; a state of flux that can only be captured via intensive engagement. Researcher must be flexible and make on the spot decisions.
