Assume that speaking and writing are forms of meaning-making. Two types: narrative anlysis of interviews designed to elicit storytelling, conversation and discourse analyses of naturally occurring speech. Uses in depth interviewing to encourage respondents to talk freely about their lives. Analyses involves repeatedly listening to tape of interview and scrutinizing the transcript to identify stories from which structural components are then delineated. Narrative analyst may examine how respondents voice themselves and others, thereby indicating social relationships and the meanings attached to them. Concersation analysis (ca) examines sequencing, turn taking, holding the floor, interruption, and other aspects of conversation that reveal how social roles ad identities are manifested during talk.
