Document Summary

May target highly regarded practitioners, policy makers, public figures etc. Individuals add a top-down insider perspective to a study. These interviews require special planning and foresight as professionals have little to gain from talking to a researcher but might have plently to lose. Questioned tailored individually to ensure maximum use of time and draw on unique perspectives. It is harder to disguise identity of experts. Qualitative interviews are goal directed and conversational w/o being a conversation: clarify stance as much as possibly, develop interview guide and pilot test it. Open ended questions structured around study"s domains or categories of informational needs. Use probes, some are anticipated and others emerge on ad hoc basis. Questions should allow for contingencies such that the interviewer may skip a question that is not relevant or has already been discussed. Sequencing of questions: avoid starting out with demographic/factual questions that did wrong impression of the purpose of a qualitative interview.
